Shinhan Bank said on Wednesday it will implement a "lease fraud prevention financial-cost support programme" to help prevent jeonse fraud and strengthen housing stability for tenants.

A deposit-return guarantee for jeonse leases is a system under which a guarantee institution pays the deposit in place of the landlord if the landlord does not return it. 대표 products include the HF Jikim Guarantee and the HUG Return Guarantee.

Shinhan Bank prepared the support programme after considering that the burden of guarantee fees could make it difficult for socially vulnerable groups to subscribe.

Those eligible are customers who use Shinhan Bank's jeonse loan and have joined either the HF Jikim Guarantee or the HUG Return Guarantee, including youth born from 1991 to 2006, multicultural families, and households that include a person with a disability either as the customer or a family member.

The programme will run until Nov. 30, with support capped at 300,000 won per person. About 3,900 people are expected to benefit, with support amounting to about 1.1 billion won.

A Shinhan Bank official said, "The deposit-return guarantee for jeonse leases is a key system for tenants' housing stability, but the cost burden can be a barrier to 가입." The official added, "We will continue to expand support for financially vulnerable groups."
