South Korea's National AI Strategy Committee on Monday held a civil society meeting on an "AI Basic Society", hosted by its social subcommittee.

The meeting explained policy recommendations related to an AI Basic Society in the draft "Korea AI Action Plan" announced in December last year and gathered views from civil society. Yoo Jae-yeon, head of the social subcommittee, subcommittee members, major domestic civic groups such as People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy and the Digital Justice Network, and experts attended.

Participants said differences in AI capability and access could lead to knowledge gaps and deepen social inequality, and that policy execution for an AI Basic Society needed to be strengthened. They also stressed that cooperation involving the government, civil society and experts was essential for the goal to translate into tangible results.

Yoo said, "An AI Basic Society is a policy goal to create a society where AI leads the lives of all citizens in a better direction." He added, "We plan to use various channels for communication, including an AI public discussion platform, so that civil society can become a key partner in an AI Basic Society."

The committee will refine tasks related to an AI Basic Society based on opinions raised at the meeting. It plans to strengthen implementation planning and institutional support through cooperation among relevant ministries.
