[DigitalToday reporter Jinju Hong] Personal mobility company Segway has officially launched the MUXI, a compact electric bike aimed at both urban travel and carrying cargo. It is expanding its portfolio with a model that strengthens practicality and expandability beyond existing commuter e-bikes.
Electrek, an electric vehicle-focused outlet, reported on April 14 (local time) that MUXI went on sale that day after being unveiled at CES earlier this year.
The key to MUXI is a frame design that differs from typical commuter e-bikes. It places its 716Wh battery at the bottom of the frame rather than on a standard downtube, lowering the centre of gravity. That improves stability and handling even at high speeds or when carrying loads, it explained. The overall design adopts a form closer to a small electric moped than a traditional bicycle.
Its drivetrain is also configured for real-world use. Based on a 750W rear hub motor and 80Nm of torque, it supports a top speed of 32 km per hour. This meets Class 2 electric bike specifications, which include a throttle.
A notable hardware feature is the central space in the frame. A wide opening in the middle and a low step-through structure allow a storage module to be fitted to carry equipment, groceries or bags. That enables use closer to a small utility vehicle rather than simply a means of transport.
Connectivity features have also been strengthened. It supports Apple Find My-based location tracking and wireless software updates, while GPS tracking, auto lock and unlock functions (AirLock), navigation and family sharing are offered as subscription services.
The frame is designed with practicality as the priority. Its curb weight is 33 kg, making it heavier than lightweight models, but it focuses on carrying capacity and stability. Adding an optional rear seat and footrests also allows two people to ride.
The price is set at $1,699 (about 2.5 million won). Segway is expanding its business scope from a scooter-focused lineup to include electric bikes and small electric mobility devices through this product.
The industry is evaluating MUXI as a hybrid model that combines the boundaries of an electric bike, a cargo bike and a lightweight electric moped. As competition intensifies in the short-distance travel market, attention is on what results Segway will achieve with a differentiation strategy built around practicality and carrying capability.
