KT said on Tuesday it will conduct emergency restoration drills for fire response to prepare for the spring wildfire caution period.

The drills are aimed at keeping the network operating stably even if disasters such as wildfires or fires at telecommunications stations occur. KT will use SFC (Smart Field Check), an on-site communication platform. SFC is an application that centrally manages restoration status for wireless and transmission facilities among KT, its affiliates and partner firms when disasters occur.

SFC can prevent duplicated dispatches and allows real-time checks of restoration status on site, enabling efficient collaboration among restoration teams. KT plans to strengthen rapid and systematic responses through SFC in future disaster situations.

KT is also upgrading its SuperCell technology, which it expects to be effective in disaster situations. SuperCell is a next-generation communications technology that spans ground and air. It combines a high-performance lens antenna with non-terrestrial network (NTN) technology to provide a much wider communications coverage than before. KT completed development last year of a SuperCell high-altitude base station that can provide networks even in areas such as mountainous, island and maritime regions where access to existing terrestrial infrastructure is difficult.

Jong-sik Lee (이종식), head of KT's Future Network Lab, said KT will continue to upgrade technology so it can provide uninterrupted communications services even in disaster situations as a key telecoms operator providing universal communications services. He said the company will prepare for the evolution of 6G ubiquitous networks through advances in non-terrestrial network technology such as satellites.
