LG Uplus said on April 15 it will upgrade Wi-Fi services on Busan Urban Railway trains to a 5G-based system to improve the wireless internet environment.

LG Uplus will switch the Wi-Fi network on Busan Urban Railway trains operated by Busan Transportation Corp from an LTE-based system to a 5G-based system. Busan Urban Railway will apply LG Uplus 5G backhaul in the 3.5 GHz frequency band to provide faster and more stable wireless internet service.

The company said the project is in line with the policy direction announced on April 9 by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the three mobile carriers to improve the quality of communications services on public transport.

Busan Transportation Corp and LG Uplus are currently running a pilot 5G service on some trains and will expand the service to trains on all lines within the year.

Lee Byeong-jin (이병진), president of Busan Transportation Corp, said it will continue to expand digital-based smart transport services and actively work to improve communications welfare that citizens can feel, as well as transport welfare.

Kam Chung-ryeol (감충렬), head of South Gyeongnam infrastructure at LG Uplus, said it will continue to cooperate with Busan Transportation Corp to improve communications quality that citizens can feel and enhance convenience for public transport use.
