[Digital Today reporter Jin-ho Lee (이진호)] LG Uplus logged a total of 181,009 cases on the first day of its SIM updates and free replacements to address a security vulnerability in the subscriber identification number (IMSI) on existing SIM cards. It carried out 95,986 SIM updates and 85,023 SIM replacements.

LG Uplus has been rolling out SIM updates and free replacements sequentially to all customers from April 13. Customers eligible for SIM updates can take action directly through the U+one app and the website. Customers who want a SIM update or replacement at a store should visit after making a reservation.

LG Uplus is also supporting customers on the ground nationwide, including in island areas such as Ulleung County in North Gyeongsang Province, to help older people and military personnel receive SIM updates and free replacements smoothly.

LG Uplus Chief Executive Bum-sik Hong (홍범식) visited a company-run store at Jongno 3-ga Station in Seoul and a partner store at Jonggak Station on April 13 to inspect SIM update and free replacement operations. He urged steps to address customer inconvenience. LG Uplus plans to continue checking, as of the previous day, SIM update and replacement results and key operating conditions and reflect them in customer guidance.

Jae-won Lee (이재원), head of LG Uplus' consumer division and a vice president, said the company is combining reservation-based operations with on-site responses to make SIM updates and free replacements smoother. He said there were temporary delays on the first day of operations, but the company will stabilise the service through additional work such as expanding capacity and apply a strengthened security system without disruption.
