South Korea's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee said its standing vice chair Lim Moon-young (임문영) held a senior-level meeting on Wednesday morning at the Navy Operations Command to accelerate AI transformation for the Navy and Marine Corps.
Lim urged building a cooperation system between military experts and private-sector AI experts around AX hubs, and creating a maritime test site dedicated to unmanned systems.
Lim noted that the Maven Smart System, which has proven effective in the U.S.-Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars, is the result of collaboration between military experts and private AI companies such as Google and Palantir. He stressed that the U.S. Navy's TF-59 public-private collaboration model for unmanned systems should be combined with South Korea's shipbuilding, marine and AI capabilities. Attendees included Sim Seung-bae (심승배), head of the defense and security division, Lt. Gen. Kwak Kwang-seop (곽광섭), acting commander of the Navy Operations Command, and Brig. Gen. Lee Yong-tae (이용태), head of the Navy headquarters' information planning staff.
The committee said it plans to concentrate government capabilities on AX hubs to support the Navy and Marine Corps in securing AI-based advanced combat power in territorial waters and major sea lanes.
Lim said, "In recent wars, AI is being integrated around command-and-control systems and drones, making decision-making and attacks more intelligent."
