South Korea's National Artificial Intelligence Strategy Committee said Lim Moon-young (임문영), its standing vice chairman, and members of its regional special committee visited Changwon in South Gyeongsang Province on April 7 to check the status of AI adoption at manufacturing sites and review progress on regional AI transformation (AX) projects based on "physical AI".
The committee reviewed cases of process operations based on AI and digital twins at LG Electronics' Changwon smart factory. It checked the potential to expand physical AI combined with robots, autonomous transport and equipment control, as well as the possibility of shifting to an unmanned autonomous "dark factory". It then held a meeting at Changwon National University with about 10 companies, including Hyundai Wia and LG Electronics, to discuss joint use of data at the industrial complex level and ways to train site-tailored AI talent.
It also visited Gyeongnam Technopark in the Changwon National Industrial Complex to review the status of development and demonstration based on a physical intelligence action model (LAM). The committee held a meeting with the Ministry of Science and ICT, South Gyeongsang Province, Sinsung Delta Tech, Hwaseung R&A and GMB Korea, among others, and heard about difficulties at worksites.
Lim said, "To leap to No. 1 in the world in physical AI, we must go beyond innovation by individual companies and achieve a shift to an AX ecosystem at the industrial complex level where data, technology and infrastructure are closely connected."
