Ryu Je-myeong (류제명), second vice minister at the Ministry of Science and ICT, attended a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and a ceremony marking 40 years since the launch of the TDX electronic switching system at ETRI's Daejeon headquarters on Tuesday. He looked back on ETRI's achievements and reaffirmed resolve for the next 50 years.

Founded in 1976, ETRI is a leading government-funded research institute that has led the development of South Korea's information and communications technology over the past 50 years. Over the past half-century, it has played a key role in helping South Korea rise as an ICT powerhouse, from TDX and code division multiple access (CDMA) to DRAM semiconductors, high-speed internet, 5G mobile communications and artificial intelligence (AI).

Ryu said, "The government will work with ETRI to create a new history for 'South Korea as a powerhouse in AI and science and technology' by expanding investment in research and development, improving systems and strengthening the industry-academia-research cooperation ecosystem."
