Samsung Electronics said on Tuesday it will supply heat pump-based HVAC solutions to a large housing complex in the Cornwall area of Britain. The supply will cover 1,500 households in West Carclaze Garden Village, which redevelops about 610,000 pyeong of a former mine site in Cornwall, southwest England.

The project involves Eco Bos, a British developer specialising in low-carbon and high-efficiency housing, and Homes England, a housing and regional administration body under the UK central government. Samsung Electronics plans to supply heat pump-based HVAC solutions, home appliances and its AI-based B2B energy management solution, SmartThings Pro, across the complex.

Products to be supplied are the Mono R290 and Mono R32 models in Samsung's EHS home heat pump lineup. The Mono R290 uses propane, a natural refrigerant, and has a low global warming potential (GWP). It can provide heating in conditions as low as minus 25 degrees Celsius and supplies hot water for heating up to 75 degrees Celsius at minus 10 degrees Celsius. The Mono R32 uses a refrigerant with a GWP about 68 percent lower than conventional R410. It is about 800 mm high and 310 mm deep, allowing installation in tight spaces such as under windows or on balconies.

Samsung Electronics will also supply home appliances including refrigerators, washing machines and ovens alongside the heat pumps. These products connect to SmartThings, enabling appliance control and energy monitoring. SmartThings also links with on-site solar power generation (PV) and energy storage systems (ESS). Electricity produced by PV is stored in ESS and then supplied first to heat pumps and appliances, and surplus power can be sold to power companies.

SmartThings Pro will be used to manage the entire complex. The solution integrates management of household appliances and smart devices as well as public facilities including community centres, schools and hospitals. Administrators can use an integrated dashboard to track energy use in each household in real time and remotely check for abnormalities.

Im Seong-taek (임성택), a vice president in Samsung Electronics' DA division, said the company will supply a large volume of products and solutions for the project after its differentiated integrated energy management solution was recognised. He said Samsung will further advance its integrated energy management system and expand supplies of high-efficiency heat pump solutions.
