Harold Rogers (해롤드 로저스), interim head of Coupang’s South Korean unit, attended a closed-door meeting of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee on Feb. 23 local time and testified for about seven hours. Robert Porter (로버트 포터), Coupang Inc’s chief global affairs officer, said on Feb. 24 that the situation in South Korea was regrettable and the company would seek a constructive solution.

In a statement on Feb. 24, Porter said, "We regret the situation in South Korea that has now led to a hearing by the U.S. House." He added, "We are still working to find a constructive solution." He also said he hopes the company can serve as a bridge between the United States and South Korea, and expressed hope it would benefit both countries through improved economic ties, a stronger security alliance, and increased trade and investment.

Earlier, Rogers, who is serving as interim Coupang chief executive, entered the Judiciary Committee meeting room in the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington at about 9:40 a.m. and gave closed-door testimony for about seven hours.

The meeting was held after a subpoena sent to Rogers by Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and Scott Fitzgerald, chairman of the Subcommittee on the Administrative State, Regulatory Reform and Antitrust, both Republicans. The session centred on committee staff and lawyers.

The subpoena was reported to say that the South Korean government has continued targeted attacks despite reaching a trade agreement with the Trump administration to avoid discriminatory treatment and unnecessary barriers against U.S. companies. It also argued that moves by the South Korean government to target Coupang and seek to indict a U.S. executive run counter to recent commitments.

The industry expected Rogers to complain at the meeting that the South Korean government has discriminated against him and Coupang and tried to punish them. Coupang and Rogers are currently under police investigation over multiple suspicions and allegations, including downsizing the scale of an information leak and destroying evidence, perjury at a National Assembly hearing, and covering up industrial accidents.
