Baek Kyung-hoon (배경훈), deputy prime minister and minister of science and ICT, met Canadian Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu on Monday and discussed ways to strengthen science and technology cooperation between the two countries.

The two sides reviewed ongoing cooperation, including joint research and personnel exchanges, based on the Science, Technology and Innovation Cooperation Agreement signed in 2016. They also discussed the direction for the fifth Joint Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation, to be held in Seoul in the second half of this year.

Baek said, "I hope that through the joint committee we can share policies in key technology areas and identify specific cooperation tasks."

He added, "I ask that, taking the Canadian trade mission's visit to South Korea as an opportunity, practical and meaningful cooperation expands across various economic, industrial and technology fields such as shipbuilding, defence and energy."
