In Seoul’s foreign exchange market, the won-dollar exchange rate stood at 1,535.7 as of 2 p.m. on March 31, up 20.0 won from the previous day’s daytime close.

The exchange rate rose to as high as 1,536.5 around 1:49 p.m., marking the highest level in about 17 years since March 10, 2009.

At the same time, the dollar index fell 0.041 from the previous day to 100.432, but weakness in the won intensified instead.

Shin Hyun-song (신현송), the nominee for Bank of Korea governor, said on the day he did not place much significance on the current exchange rate level. The exchange rate then continued to rise.
