OpenAI has halted development of an adult mode for ChatGPT, TechCrunch reported on March 26, citing the Financial Times.

OpenAI has indefinitely put on hold plans to introduce an “adult mode” to ChatGPT. After OpenAI CEO Sam Altman mentioned the adult mode in October last year, internal backlash and external criticism intensified and the controversy spread. The Wall Street Journal reported that an OpenAI advisory board meeting even warned the adult mode could become a “sexy suicide coach.”

After the launch of the adult mode was delayed several times, there is now no official timeline. An OpenAI spokesperson said in response to TechCrunch’s request for comment, “There is nothing further to add.”

The move coincides with a recent pattern of OpenAI winding down several projects over the past week. ChatGPT’s instant checkout feature and Sora, an AI video generator, were also halted in succession. Some have criticised Sora since its launch last year, saying it has led to a decline in the quality of AI-generated content.
