Bright Energy Partners (BEP) has won successive contracts in the central contract market for battery energy storage systems (BESS). BEP said on Sunday it was selected as the preferred bidder for a total 162 MW project after forming a consortium with Korea Southern Power in the Korea Power Exchange’s 'Second 2025 ESS Central Contract Market Competitive Tender'. The award covers large-scale BESS projects to be built in Haenam, South Jeolla Province, with 96 MW, and in Jindo, South Jeolla Province, with 66 MW.
The BEP-Korea Southern Power consortium was also selected as the preferred bidder for a 48 MW BESS project in Jindo, South Jeolla Province, in the 'First 2025 ESS Central Contract Market Competitive Tender'. Including the earlier Jeju Andeok 23 MW BESS project, BEP’s cumulative central contract market BESS awards total 233 MW.
BEP has been taking part in the Jeju long-duration BESS pilot project since November 2023. The company said it has enhanced its capabilities across the full process from project development to design, construction, and operations and maintenance.
BEP is expanding its BESS business in earnest after broadening its renewable energy generation and electric vehicle charging infrastructure businesses. It is strengthening its business foundation as a total clean energy company that links renewable energy production, storage and supply.
Kim Bong-ju (김봉주), head of the renewable energy business division at Bright Energy Partners, said the role of long-duration BESS in helping secure grid stability and flexibility is becoming more important than ever as the share of renewable energy increases. He said the company will continue to expand its business areas beyond the central contract market, including into distribution-linked BESS markets, to contribute to the stable spread of renewable energy.
