Samsung Display has developed a low-reflection, high-durability film for QD-OLED monitors called Quantum Black (QuantumBlack™). The company said on March 26 it will apply the technology across new QD-OLED monitor products to be released this year.
Quantum Black cuts light reflectance by an additional 20 percent compared with the company’s existing film and raises panel hardness from 2H to about 3H. The company said it has completed trademark registration to promote the technology as a proprietary brand.
QD-OLED is a self-emissive display that delivers “True Black” by fully cutting off power to the pixels. In real-world use, surrounding light can reflect off the screen and weaken black performance. The company said it has developed and applied low-reflection films since the early stages of its QD-OLED monitor business and has now unveiled a new film that lowers reflectance further.
In FPS (first-person shooter) or survival games, the company said, the technology can allow clearer recognition of enemy silhouettes and item locations and could also affect win rates.
Quantum Black also strengthens durability. Internal evaluations showed that applying the film improves QD-OLED hardness from 2H to 3H. The company said 3H is strong enough that scratching with a fingernail does not leave marks on the panel, reducing the risk of scratches during moving or cleaning.
Jung Yong-wook (정용욱), head of the strategy marketing team at the large display business division and an executive director, said: “Quantum Black technology further strengthens the deep and perfect black expression that is an essential advantage of QD-OLED, providing a differentiated sense of immersion, while also enhancing panel durability. We will continue to create new user experiences in both gaming and content environments through innovative technologies.”
