A report said OpenAI will launch a smart speaker as its first hardware product in 2027.
The Information reported on Feb. 20 local time that an OpenAI smart speaker will include a camera and a facial recognition system, in addition to ChatGPT functions. The price is expected to be between $200 and $300.
OpenAI last year acquired a hardware company founded by Jony Ive for $6.5 billion, stepping up its push into the hardware market. It later set its direction on a smart speaker rather than a wearable and is developing it with a target launch of March 2027. It is also considering smart glasses and a smart lamp, but it is unclear whether they will be commercialised.
Rivals are also entering the AI hardware market. Apple is preparing AI-based smart glasses and a pendant, as well as camera-equipped AirPods.
OpenAI is also said to be considering developing smart glasses and smart lighting in addition to the smart speaker. The Information reported that mass production of the smart glasses could come after 2028 and that OpenAI has made a prototype smart light, but it is unclear whether it will be launched.
