LG Display said on March 22 it will be the first in the world to mass-produce a laptop LCD panel that automatically adjusts its refresh rate from 1 hertz (Hz) to up to 120Hz depending on the usage environment.

The panel applies LG Display’s self-developed 'Oxide 1Hz' technology. When the screen remains still during static tasks such as checking email or reading e-books, the refresh rate drops to 1Hz. When the user moves the mouse or starts a video or game, it automatically switches to up to 120Hz.

A higher refresh rate makes the screen appear smoother, but keeping a high refresh rate even on still images causes unnecessary power consumption. To address the issue, LG Display developed its own circuit algorithms and panel design technologies and discovered and applied new materials. It minimized power consumption in the low-refresh-rate range by applying oxide, which has the lowest power leakage, to thin-film transistors (TFT).

The company explained it can improve battery usage by more than 48% compared with existing products. With laptop power consumption rising as AI computing tasks increase, the company expects the technology to be used more widely.

The 'Oxide 1Hz' panel will be supplied first to the XPS, a top-spec premium line from global PC maker Dell. Dell unveiled a new XPS model equipped with the panel at CES 2026 in January.

LG Display is preparing to expand the technology to OLED panels as well, targeting mass production in 2027. It also plans to continue developing energy-reduction technologies and to push a 'carbon emissions reduction project' to cut carbon emissions generated during the use stage by up to 10%.

Jae-won Jang (장재원), head of mid-sized product planning at LG Display, said, "Through the successful mass production of the 'Oxide 1Hz' panel, we will widen the technology gap with competitors and be reborn as a technology-driven company."
