[Digital Today reporter Chi-gyu Hwang] Data security company Cohesity has directly integrated a Sophos malware detection engine into its backup solution. It aims to find threats hidden in backup data and prevent reinfection during recovery.

Techzine reported on March 20 that Cohesity has officially added Sophos-based malware scanning to the Cohesity Data Cloud.

The Sophos threat intelligence engine handles detection. It combines signature-based detection, heuristic analysis and file emulation to cover threats that are difficult to catch with existing tools. Zero-day, polymorphic and fileless malware are all targets for detection.

Backup data has long been considered a safe area, but that assumption is being shaken as ransomware and supply-chain attacks become more sophisticated. Techzine reported that there are more cases in which malware lies dormant in backup data and causes reinfection during recovery.

A Sophos ransomware status report showed global ransomware attacks rose 32 percent in 2025, and 54 percent of victims recovered from backups. That was the lowest level in 6 years.

Vasu Murthy (바수 머시), Cohesity's chief product officer, said, "We deeply integrated Sophos next-generation malware detection into the Cohesity Data Cloud so customers can discover hidden threats in backup data and recover safely."

The feature is included in the Cohesity Data Cloud Enterprise Edition without a separate Sophos license. Cohesity plans to demonstrate the feature at the RSAC 2026 security conference, which runs from March 23 to 26.
