Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Science and ICT Bae Gyeong-hun (배경훈) on Thursday chaired as co-chair the ministerial council of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) in New Delhi, India, and discussed intergovernmental AI cooperation with ministers from major countries.

The meeting was held in conjunction with the AI Impact Summit. GPAI is a multi-stakeholder consultative body that promotes the development and use of safe and trustworthy AI based on the OECD AI Principles, with 44 countries participating, including OECD members. South Korea and Singapore will serve as co-chairs in 2026.

The meeting discussed GPAI's key work for 2026, expert activities and the direction of AI policies in each country. Participants agreed on the importance of enhancing accountability of AI systems, ensuring stable access to computing infrastructure and strengthening policy implementation, the ministry said.

Bae said, "Artificial intelligence is a key driver reshaping the economy and society overall." He said the focus should move beyond discussing potential to responsible use and creating tangible results. He also introduced South Korea's efforts to expand AI computing infrastructure, foster data and talent, and spread field-oriented demonstrations, and said he would share them with the international community.

Ahead of the meeting, Bae held a series of talks with ministers from major countries. He discussed ways to cooperate as GPAI co-chairs with Singapore's Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo (조세핀 테오), and shared experiences on hosting an AI summit and serving as GPAI chair with India's Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw (아슈위니 바이슈나우), exploring the possibility of cooperation in establishing international AI standards and norms.

He shared the two countries' AI policy directions with White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios (마이클 크라치오스) and discussed specific ways to implement the Korea-U.S. Technology Prosperity Deal agreed on the occasion of APEC in October last year.
