OpenAI will acquire developer tools startup Astral to strengthen its position in the AI coding market, CNBC reported on March 19 local time.
The size of the deal was not disclosed.
OpenAI plans to expand its AI coding assistant Codex through the Astral acquisition. It is pursuing a strategy of increasing market share against Anthropic, Cursor and others.
Astral has provided open-source developer tools.
OpenAI Codex currently has 2,000,000 weekly active users, up threefold from early this year.
Earlier, OpenAI acquired AI device startup io for $6.4 billion last year and recently also bought cybersecurity startup PromptFoo.
