The Ministry of Science and ICT held a groundbreaking ceremony on March 19 for the National Ulsan carbon neutrality specialised science museum at a construction site in Sinjeong-dong, Nam-gu, Ulsan.
The National Ulsan carbon neutrality specialised science museum is the country’s first specialised science museum to be built around carbon neutrality, in line with responding to the climate crisis and the era of energy transition. The project will cost 43 billion won, split 50-50 between national and local funding, with completion targeted for December 2027. The museum will be a four-storey building with a site area of 20,039 square metres and a total floor area of 7,513 square metres.
The museum will offer carbon-neutrality-related exhibitions, hands-on experiences and educational programmes linked to local industries. It is to be run as an experiential science museum open to all generations, including children, teenagers and residents.
Kim Sung-soo (김성수), director-general for R&D Policy at the ministry, said he hopes the museum will become an important space for accumulating “Ulsan-style scientific capital.” He said the ministry will continue to provide support so the importance of carbon neutrality and science and technology can be conveyed to future generations.
