The Korea Media Communications Committee said on Tuesday it will hold a public meeting on March 20 at 10 a.m. at the main conference room of Post Tower in Seoul's Myeongdong to discuss North America World Cup broadcasts and improvements to the universal viewing rights system.
The meeting follows growing public debate over universal viewing rights after the Milan Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Olympics in February was aired exclusively on a pay-TV channel. The North America World Cup, to be held from June 11 to July 19, is also facing difficulties in broadcast-rights negotiations among broadcasters, prompting the committee to gather opinions from various sectors.
The event will include a presentation by Jo Young-shin (조영신), a professor at Dongguk University, followed by a discussion joined by civic groups, broadcasting and media communications experts, sports officials and young people.
Kim Jong-cheol, chairman of the committee, said, "Please bring together the wisdom and interest of democratic citizens so that we can realize the people's media sovereignty and allow everyone to conveniently watch the Olympics, the World Cup and other events."
