A postman delivering mail saved a citizen who lost consciousness in a traffic accident. He not only helped save the person’s life but also directed traffic to keep vehicles moving smoothly during the morning commute.
The Postal Service said on March 17 that Yoo Sang-beom (유상범), a Seoul Gangnam Post Office postman, was passing near Hakyeoul Station in Seoul’s Gangnam district on March 12 to deliver mail when he witnessed a crash between a passenger car and a sport utility vehicle in the adjacent lane.
Yoo said it did not appear to be a major accident, but he found it suspicious that one of the vehicles involved was slowly moving forward. He drove after the vehicle in case of an emergency and confirmed the driver was unconscious.
The vehicle stopped after hitting a curb barrier. Yoo immediately called 119 and knocked on the car door. The driver regained consciousness only after several minutes. Yoo checked the driver’s condition and helped the person breathe comfortably. He then directed traffic on the congested road. After a police car arrived, he handed over the accident scene and moved on to his delivery route.
Yoo is known to actively take part in helping socially vulnerable people, including volunteering to deliver coal briquettes and visiting a welfare center for people with disabilities. “It was an urgent situation that could have led to a serious accident,” he said. “As a public official, I could not just pass by a confusing situation caused by a road accident, and I am glad I was able to rescue the driver safely.”
