An access disruption occurred on the KakaoBank app.
The financial sector said that from about 3:30 p.m. on March 17, the KakaoBank app was not smoothly accessible for about 30 minutes. During that period, some users were unable to access the app or experienced delays in using services.
Shortly after the disruption began, the number of people waiting at one point exceeded 100,000. The app displayed estimated wait times to connect ranging from several hours to minutes.
Access gradually returned to normal around 4 p.m., and services are now available.
Earlier, KakaoBank said it would carry out its annual computer system inspection, conducted regularly each year to provide stable financial services, from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. on March 22. It said the work, planned as a regular annual inspection, includes changes to system configuration and upgrades of computing equipment.
A KakaoBank official said, "The situation has now been normalized and we are closely identifying the cause." The official added, "We will do our best to minimize inconvenience to customers so the same issue does not recur."
