LG Uplus is adopting Rocky Linux from CIQ to improve the cost structure of its enterprise Linux environment.

CIQ said LG Uplus will also receive technical support from the company. Rocky Linux is provided as open source, making it available for anyone to download and use for free. CIQ provides paid subscription consulting and technical support services for Rocky Linux.

LG Uplus said renewal costs for licences in its existing enterprise Linux environment have risen by up to threefold in recent years. It said that increased the burden of long-term cost management and vendor lock-in, leading it to adopt Rocky Linux as an alternative.

LG Uplus said it has established a standard operating system based on Rocky Linux. It said official support from CIQ has secured stability for security patches, updates and long-term maintenance.

Se-hoon Ahn (안세훈), a principal architect at LG Uplus, said that for a telecoms operator running large-scale infrastructure, an operating system is not simply a technical component but a core foundation that affects costs, stability and overall service quality. He said he expects the company to be able to keep a stable enterprise operating environment while managing its cost structure more clearly through support from CIQ's engineering team.

Hyun-jin Cho (조현진), CIQ's country manager for South Korea, said LG Uplus is a representative large-scale enterprise customer that must consider cost efficiency and technical stability at the same time. He said CIQ, as a founding support partner of Rocky Linux, will continue to support LG Uplus in building a long-term reliable infrastructure operating model free from vendor lock-in.
