YouTube’s mobile and web services, which suffered an outage on Feb. 18, the last day of the Lunar New Year holiday, have been restored to normal.
Industry sources said normal video playback was not possible from about 10 a.m. on YouTube’s mobile app and web page. Access problems occurred in both mobile and PC environments. An error message saying, "An error occurred," appeared on screen and limited access to content.
As of 11:55 a.m., the service had been restored to normal. Google, which operates YouTube, said, "A recommendation system issue caused videos not to appear on YouTube Home, the YouTube app, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids," and added, "Home has been restored, but we are taking additional measures to fully normalize the service."
Meanwhile, Downdetector, a site that tracks service disruptions, showed a sharp rise in YouTube-related error reports on the day. In the United States alone, more than 350,000 access disruption reports were filed. Reports have now declined as the disruption has been restored.
