WordPress.com will introduce an AI assistant to help with website editing, TechCrunch reported on Feb. 17 local time.
Users can change layouts, adjust styles and generate images using only natural-language commands without coding. The AI assistant understands a website’s internal content and layout, and applies changes immediately when the site owner enters a prompt.
For example, if a user enters a command such as "Make this section more modern and wider" or "Change the site colors to be brighter and more intense," the AI adjusts the design. It also supports specific layout changes such as "Add a contact page" or "Add a testimonials section below this section." The feature works only on block themes and is not available on classic themes.
The AI assistant also offers content editing. If a user asks, "Make my introduction sound more confident" or "Translate this section into another language," the AI applies the change immediately. It also provides editing features such as headline suggestions, fact-checking and grammar fixes, and can be used via an '@ai' command when collaborating with team members in the block note editor introduced in WordPress 6.9.
It also includes features to support image work. The AI assistant can generate new images or edit existing ones using Google Gemini Nano Banana AI model. Users can set the desired image ratio and style through an 'Generate image' button in the media library.
The AI assistant can be enabled optionally, and users must activate it themselves by finding the AI tools item in site settings. For users who bought the AI website builder, the AI assistant is enabled automatically.
