China's tech company ByteDance is strengthening protections in response to a controversy over alleged copyright infringement involving its AI video-generation tool Seedance 2.0, CNBC reported on Feb. 16.

Seedance 2.0 can generate realistic videos from text prompts, but it has been caught up in controversy after cases emerged of unauthorised use of copyrighted characters and celebrity likenesses.

ByteDance plans to bolster measures to protect copyrights, CNBC reported.

A ByteDance spokesperson told CNBC, "We respect intellectual property rights and are aware of concerns related to Seedance 2.0." The spokesperson added, "We will introduce additional protective measures so users cannot misuse copyrights and likenesses without authorisation."

The announcement follows strong opposition from Hollywood studios over Seedance 2.0. The Motion Picture Association, representing major studios including Netflix, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros Discovery and Disney, issued a statement calling on ByteDance to immediately halt the service.
