Coupang rebutted as unfounded a claim by Democratic Party lawmaker Kim Seung-won (김승원) in a recent National Assembly government questioning session that a suspect in a large-scale personal data leak had separately selected a list of adult product buyers and sought to blackmail Coupang for money.
Coupang issued a statement on Feb. 12, saying, "The claim that the attacker (suspect) separately classified about 3,000 adult product orderers and blackmailed them is not true."
Coupang also said, "There is no content in the recently released findings of the joint public-private investigation team, or in emails sent by the attacker, that involves threats aimed at obtaining money. It is regrettable that information that differs from the facts was mentioned in government questioning." It added, "We will seek all measures to prevent recurrence and do our utmost to protect customers' personal information."
Kim claimed during National Assembly government questioning on Feb. 11, "A Coupang personal data leak suspect selected 3,000 adult product orderers from among the large volume of leaked information and created a separate list to blackmail."
Kim also said, "They threatened that since they know the address, name and phone number, if money is not paid they would disclose it externally to put Coupang in difficulty."
Prime Minister Kim Min-seok (김민석) said at the same session, "I think it is almost unprecedented, from the overall scale to the details."
