Google has unveiled the first beta of Android 17 and introduced a new developer update approach, TechCrunch reported on Tuesday.

Instead of a traditional developer beta, it will run a continuous Canary channel that provides APIs and features immediately after they pass internal testing. The approach is similar to Google’s developer update model for the Chrome browser.

Android Canary is an early developer channel build that lets users try Google’s latest Android features and changes first.

Through the Canary channel, developers can quickly test new features via over-the-air updates. Google plans to release the official version of Android 17 in the second quarter of 2026 and aims to secure platform stability in March.

Android 17 prevents developers from bypassing resizing limits on large-screen devices, improving compatibility with tablets and foldable devices. It adds an API for smoother camera switching, support for the VVC (H.266) video codec, consistent volume control across apps, and background audio controls.
