Shinhan Bank said on Tuesday it held a donation ceremony at the National Cancer Center in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang, Gyeonggi province, attended by Lee Bong-jae (이봉재), head of Shinhan Bank's Institutional and Partnership Sales Group, and Yang Han-kwang (양한광), president of the National Cancer Center.

Shinhan Bank will work with the National Cancer Center Development Fund on a programme to support medical costs for vulnerable cancer patients and help cancer survivors return to society. For this, it will donate a total of 300 million won to the fund over 3 years from this year to 2028.

First, Shinhan Bank will provide 5 million won per person in medical expenses for 24 cancer patients with income at or below 100 percent of the median, to ease the financial burden on vulnerable patients at risk of having treatment halted or delayed.

It will also run various social reintegration programmes for about 660 people who have completed cancer treatment or are in a maintenance and observation stage, including psychological counselling, a healing garden, creative activities for mental care, a walking event to strengthen physical activity, and networking programmes and flea markets. It also plans to carry out employee volunteer activities linked to the programme.

A Shinhan Bank official said, "We hope this support programme provides practical help to cancer patients at risk of having treatment discontinued and becomes a stepping stone for cancer survivors to return to society." The official added, "We will continue to fulfil corporate social responsibility by embracing neighbours in need through various social contribution activities."
