[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] OpenAI will introduce ads to users on ChatGPT’s free and low-cost subscription plan (Go), TechCrunch reported on Feb. 9 local time.

Ads will not be shown to users on paid plans (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Education).

OpenAI stressed that "ads do not affect ChatGPT answers, and user conversation content is not shared with advertisers" to minimize changes to the user experience from the introduction of ads.

The move by OpenAI is part of strengthening profitability. Rival Anthropic criticized the introduction of ads to AI services, saying it could undermine the user experience, in a Super Bowl advertisement. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (샘 알트먼) pushed back strongly, saying the criticism was "unfair".

OpenAI said "ads will not distort ChatGPT answers." It said ads will be clearly labeled, and users can check and delete their ad interaction history. It added that ads will not be shown to users under 18 and were designed not to be associated with sensitive topics such as health, politics and mental health.
