The European Union has opposed Meta's policy of blocking AI access on WhatsApp and has signalled interim measures. On Feb. 9, CNBC reported that the EU is preparing a response after concluding that Meta is suppressing AI competition. EU competition commissioner Teresa Ribera said, "We will take measures so that dominant IT companies do not gain unfair advantages." She added, "As the AI market is growing rapidly, a swift response is needed."

Meta changed its terms for WhatsApp business solutions in October last year, blocking third-party AI assistant access, and began enforcing the change from January this year. The EU launched an investigation, saying it "could seriously undermine competition."

Meta has countered that the EU's claim that the WhatsApp Business API is a key channel for AI deployment is wrong.
