Hansae Yes24 Cultural Foundation said on Feb. 9 it has translated and published the Indonesian novel "Cigarette Girl" (original title: Gacis Kretek) as the seventh title in its Southeast Asian literature series.
"Cigarette Girl" is the original novel behind a Netflix original series that gained global popularity. The series ranked in the global top 10 when it was released in 2023, and the foundation said it expects the Korean publication to be an opportunity to introduce Indonesian literature to Korean readers.
According to the foundation, Ratih Kumala (라티 쿠말라) compellingly tells the story of "Jeng Yah" (정야), a woman who forged an independent life amid love and secrets spanning three generations and the turmoil of history, against the backdrop of Indonesia's traditional kretek (clove cigarette) industry in the 1960s.
Unlike the Netflix series, which delicately portrayed characters' emotions and romance, the original novel delves deeply into an epic narrative in which Indonesian history, industry and politics are organically intertwined.
"Cigarette Girl" has been translated into 6 languages, including English, German, Arabic and Thai, since it was published in 2012. After being serialized ahead of publication as a "Yes24 Original" on Yes24's e-book subscription service Crema Club on Feb. 9, the print book and e-book will be officially released simultaneously on Feb. 23.
Author Ratih Kumala said, "I am very happy that 'Cigarette Girl' has been published at a time when there are not many Indonesian works translated into Korean." She added, "I hope this publication will help Korean readers gain a deeper understanding of Indonesia's history and culture."
