The National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Strategy Committee said on Feb. 9 it will hold an 'AI Basic Society Seminar' on Feb. 12.

The seminar, to be held at the support unit meeting room of the National AI Strategy Committee in Seoul Square, will comprehensively examine how the spread of AI technology affects broad economic and social policies, including labour, welfare, distribution and social safety nets. It aims to draw implications for directions in designing a basic society system suited to the AI era.

Members of the committee and officials from key government ministries related to AI basic society policy, including the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and the Ministry of Health and Welfare, will attend. Kang Nam-hoon (강남훈), chairman of the Basic Society Association and an honorary professor at Hanshin University, will present on the concept of a basic society in the AI era, its policy implications and directions for institutional responses to cushion social risks stemming from technological development. The seminar will also be livestreamed on YouTube, allowing anyone to watch online.

The committee plans to review how advances in AI technology affect the design of economic and social institutions, based on suggestions raised at the seminar, and use them as reference material for mid- to long-term policy discussions.
