Google has submitted additional documents to the government for exporting high-precision map data.

Industry sources said on Thursday that Google emailed supplementary documents to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport at around 11 p.m. the previous day. It submitted them by the deadline the government set for additional materials.

The documents are reported to include content accepting most of the conditions the government demanded, such as masking security facilities and limiting the exposure of coordinates. They also included technical details explaining how the map data would be handled in the future. They were also said to omit a detailed plan to establish a domestic data centre.

The government plans to review the documents and then convene the "consultative body for exporting surveying outcomes" to deliberate on whether to allow the export. A final decision is expected to take several months.

The 1:5,000 scale map that Google has applied to export is a map that depicts an actual distance of 50 metres reduced to 1 centimetre. As it includes information on sensitive facilities such as military bases, the government has maintained a cautious stance on exporting it overseas.

In November last year, the ministry held a meeting of the consultative body at the National Geographic Information Institute and required Google to supplement the documents by the previous day. Google requested the export in February last year, but the consultative body extended the deadline by deferring a decision twice, in May and August.

Google made the same request in 2007 and 2016, but the government rejected it for national security reasons. As South Korea and the United States hold trade and tariff negotiations, interest in whether the export will be allowed is growing amid talk that the United States may raise the map export issue as a negotiating point.
