Tech shares tumbled on Wall Street overnight, and the KOSPI also opened weaker. Semiconductor stocks, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, are falling sharply.
As of 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, the KOSPI was down 69.62 points, or 1.30 percent, from the previous session at 5,301.48.
In the KOSPI market, retail investors were net buyers of 1.2051 trillion won, while foreigners and institutions were net sellers of 1.2019 trillion won and 55.7 billion won, respectively.
Among the top stocks by market capitalisation, Samsung Electronics was trading at 163,600 won, down 5,500 won, or 3.25 percent, from the previous session. At the same time, SK Hynix was down 29,000 won, or 3.22 percent, at 871,000 won.
Hanwha Aerospace fell 4.83 percent, SK Square 2.81 percent, Doosan Enerbility 2.28 percent, Samsung Biologics 0.17 percent and Hyundai Motor 0.40 percent.
LG Energy Solution, meanwhile, was up 1,500 won, or 0.37 percent, at 404,000 won, attempting a rebound. Kia was also stronger, rising 1,900 won, or 1.21 percent, to 158,700 won.
At the same time, the KOSDAQ was down 14.28 points, or 1.24 percent, from the previous session at 1,135.15.
