Woori Bank has hired a global software expert who worked at Samsung Electronics and Microsoft as head of its Digital Sales Group.

Woori Bank said on Wednesday it has hired Jung Eui-chul, 56, a former executive director from Samsung Electronics' MX division, as head of its Digital Sales Group, at vice president level.

Jung will start work on Jan. 2 and oversee Woori Bank's digital platform strategy and overall non-face-to-face sales.

The appointment is a strategic move to secure leadership in the digital market amid intense competition among financial super apps.

Jung worked at Microsoft's headquarters in the United States from 1997 to 2005, where he learned advanced software development processes and global-standard verification systems.

He later joined Samsung Electronics' wireless business division, now the MX division, and worked there for about 20 years until 2025.

He served as executive director and head of the MX division's software quality team and oversaw the software competitiveness of the Galaxy smartphone series.

Woori Bank expects Jung's experience to play a decisive role in strengthening the competitiveness of an integrated financial platform for individuals and companies that incorporates AI.

Digital Sales Group reshuffle to boost business competitiveness

Woori Bank reorganised the role of its Digital Sales Group in line with the appointment.

It changed the group's lead department from the WON Banking Business Division to the Platform Business Division.

It also integrated within the group its previously scattered BaaS (Banking as a Service) business, non-face-to-face pension marketing functions and other operations to strengthen execution.

Jung is set to lead efforts to expand customers through non-face-to-face channels and boost engagement with the banking app immediately after taking office.

He will take on major tasks for 2026, including attracting new customers through a mobile web rebuild, increasing usage of Woori WON Banking and expanding partnership businesses based on BaaS (Banking as a Service).

Woori Bank also plans to accelerate the creation of new digital-based revenue sources by improving convenience for the supply chain finance platform OneBiz Plaza for corporate customers, activating Woori SAFE Settlement and expanding the industries where it is applied.

Jung is also expected to play a positive role in boosting the competitiveness of key partnership businesses, including the Samsung Wallet points and money service, which Woori Bank is focusing on.

A Woori Bank official said Jung is a rare leader who combines Samsung's meticulous quality management with Microsoft's flexible culture of innovation, and said his arrival would raise the bank's digital financial services to the next level technologically.

Jung said he would embed the software quality philosophy and customer-centric thinking he built in the global big tech field into the financial platform, and said he aims to create a "different-level financial app" that customers trust most and can use conveniently in daily life.
