ABB, a global electrification and automation company, said on Tuesday it has unveiled Automation Extended, a programme that supports upgrades of distributed control systems (DCS) without operational shutdowns at industrial sites.

The company said the programme is designed to enable a step-by-step expansion of automation capabilities by providing the flexibility, scalability and efficiency needed for next-generation industrial operations while maintaining the stability of existing systems. It focuses on supporting advanced data analytics and IoT integration, and on reducing complexity in process operations.

Because new technologies are applied gradually to ABB process automation systems already in operation at sites, it can also minimise risks associated with system modernisation, the company said.

Peter Terwiesch (피터 터비쉬), president of ABB's automation business, said, "ABB customers in industries that operate on large-scale infrastructure need ways to modernise systems without disrupting process flows." He added, "Automation Extended meets those needs by supporting customers in adding future-ready capabilities with security and interoperability to the systems they already use."
