LG Energy Solution said on Tuesday it has signed a contract with Hanwha Qcells to supply 5 GWh of energy storage system (ESS) batteries.

The products to be supplied are LFP batteries produced at its Holland, Michigan plant. Deliveries will be made in stages over three years from 2028 to 2030 and installed in ESS projects Hanwha Qcells is pursuing across the United States. The contract also includes LG Energy Solution Vertech’s lifecycle services.

The deal is the second order win following a 4.8 GWh contract signed in May 2024. Hanwha Qcells completed installation for the May 2024 contract and, that year, took on and completed EPC for a solar and ESS complex in California that supplies electricity for Meta to use. In 2022, it pursued and sold 7 ESS projects totaling 2.4 GWh.

The two companies will build energy infrastructure linking batteries and solar modules based on production bases in the United States. LG Energy Solution’s batteries are produced in Michigan, while Hanwha Qcells’ solar modules are produced in Georgia.

Hanwha Qcells is building Solar Hub in Georgia, a silicon-based integrated solar production complex that it describes as the largest in North America. Once completed, it will secure a stable supply of modules and ESS that meet U.S. manufacturing requirements.

LG Energy Solution plans this year to pursue portfolio rebalancing centered on ESS while expanding local battery production capacity and increasing leadership in the global ESS market.

Jae-hong Park (박재홍), head of LG Energy Solution Vertech Corp, said it will strengthen cooperation with Hanwha Qcells by supporting the entire project process and continue a long-term partnership based on differentiated value. He said projects pursued jointly by the two companies are expected to contribute to customers’ long-term business success and stabilisation of the U.S. power grid.

Chris Hodrick (크리스 호드릭), head of the EPC business division at Hanwha Qcells, said the partnership with LG Energy Solution has laid the groundwork for Hanwha Qcells to effectively respond to large-scale ESS demand required by the U.S. power market. He said Hanwha Qcells will provide integrated energy solutions from solar to ESS and secure a differentiated position in the global energy market.
