Coupang’s number of users fell by about 1.1 million in a month. Membership withdrawals that began in December last year due to a personal data leak continue. Coupang’s rate of user decline increased tenfold, to 3.2 percent last month from 0.3 percent in December last year.
Wiseapp Retail, a retail analysis service, said on Monday that Coupang’s monthly active users (MAU) in January totalled 33,180,863. That was down 3.2 percent from a month earlier. In user terms, it fell by 1,099,901.
This suggests that compensation coupons paid on Jan. 15 as compensation for the personal data leak did not have a big effect in preventing members from withdrawing.
Over the same period, users of Naver Plus Store, which is seen as a competitor, increased. Naver Plus Store’s MAU was tallied at 7,090,662 last month, up from 6,443,758 in December last year. It entered the 7 million range last month and ranked among the top 5 in the comprehensive shopping mall application category.
Among the top 5 comprehensive shopping mall applications, only Naver Plus Store posted a 10 percent increase in users. Coupang, AliExpress (down 1.3 percent), Temu (down 0.3 percent) and 11st (down 0.9 percent) all declined.
Over the same period, users of No. 6 Gmarket fell 2.4 percent to 6,796,621, and GS SHOP dropped 7.5 percent to 2,653,028. Users of No. 8 CJ OnStyle rose 5.5 percent to 2,510,854.
