[DigitalToday reporter Chi-gyu Hwang (황치규)] OpenAI is launching its AI-powered coding assistant app, Codex, as a standalone app for Apple computers, CNBC reported on Sunday.

The Codex app serves as a “command center” that can manage multiple AI agents at the same time, helping developers work more efficiently.

Codex was launched in April last year and was expanded to general users from October.

OpenAI said more than 1 million developers used Codex over the past month. With the standalone app launch, competition around coding AI is expected to intensify among Anthropic, Cursor and OpenAI.

The Codex app supports long-term work by setting up AI agents by project. It can also use various “skills,” including image generation, to perform tasks beyond basic coding.

Existing paid ChatGPT users (Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu) can use Codex, and additional credits can also be purchased.

With the standalone app launch, free users and low-cost subscription (Go) users can also use Codex temporarily, CNBC said.
