[DigitalToday reporter Yoonseo Lee (이윤서)] Apple’s first foldable iPhone launch is becoming more concrete. On Jan. 30 (local time), tech outlet Engadget reported that Apple’s foldable phone, referred to as the “iPhone Fold”, is being developed with a target release in the second half of 2026 and is likely to be positioned as a premium flagship lineup rather than an experimental product for a niche market.

So far, the most widely discussed form factor in the industry is a book-style design that opens and closes like a book. Observers say the inner display when unfolded will be about 7.7 to 7.8 inches, aiming for a user experience closer to a tablet. When folded, it is expected to be usable like a regular smartphone through an outer display of around 5.5 inches. Based on related CAD leaks and mould information from case makers, some also claim it could adopt a shorter and wider ratio than existing iPhones when folded.

The display, a core element of foldable phones, is seen as hinging on minimising creases. According to multiple reports, Apple has been developing foldable OLED technology with maximum crease reduction as a priority. An approach under discussion involves applying a structure, such as a metal support plate, to distribute stress in the folding area. Observers also say Apple has demanded a level where the crease is “almost not visible” as a condition for entering the foldable market.

A scenario featuring a total of 4 cameras is widely mentioned. It would combine a dual rear camera (main and ultra-wide), a punch-hole camera on the outer display and an under-display camera on the inner screen. For biometric authentication, an approach incorporating Touch ID into the power button, instead of Face ID, is being discussed. Some interpret this as aligning with a design stance aimed at minimising cutouts such as a notch or the “Dynamic Island” on both screens.

The hinge, which affects durability, is also cited as a differentiation point. Some leaked information claims Apple is seeking to reduce deformation and wear by applying high-strength, high-durability materials to the hinge. Observers say it is testing high-density battery cells at about 5,000 to 5,800 mAh, which, if true, could be among the largest battery capacities in the iPhone lineup.

The price is likely to make it the “most expensive iPhone ever”. The market is discussing $2,000 to $2,500 in the United States, and observers say it is likely to be positioned above the iPhone Pro Max. The cost of foldable-specific components, mass-production yield and durability design are cited as key factors that will determine the price.

The product name itself, “iPhone Fold”, has not been confirmed either. With the launch timing, specifications and software optimisation, such as an iOS experience tailored to a folding screen, subject to adjustment at the final stage, some say it is safer to treat it as a “leading scenario” until further information emerges.
