Oracle and OpenAI have withdrawn their plan to expand a data centre campus in Abilene, Texas, the Financial Times reported on Thursday.

The two companies had been holding talks with data centre developer Crusoe to expand the Abilene campus to 600 megawatts. The Abilene campus is currently being built at a scale of 1.2 gigawatts.

The expansion plan included at least 2 buildings dedicated to OpenAI.

OpenAI infrastructure executive Sachin Katti (사친 카티) said on X, "We considered an expansion in Abilene, but decided to deploy additional capacity in other locations." He added, "We are currently developing more than 6 sites across several states, including Wisconsin."

The Abilene campus is the first site to break ground under OpenAI's infrastructure project Stargate. Alongside OpenAI, Japan's SoftBank and Oracle are participating as major investors in Stargate.

Oracle and OpenAI will keep their existing contract. The two companies signed a $300 billion deal last September under which Oracle will supply OpenAI with 4.5 gigawatts of computing capacity.
