South Korea's Personal Information Protection Commission said on Monday it launched the "2026 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Privacy Public-Private Policy Consultative Body" and held its first plenary meeting.

The consultative body includes 37 experts from academia and industry and plans to advance the regulatory framework for new AI technologies. In line with the spread of agent and physical AI, it will shift the policy focus from existing "data collection and training" to "compound risks in service flows."

The body will operate three subcommittees covering data processing standards, risk management and data subject rights. It will prepare standards for personal data processing for agent AI in June. It plans to revise the risk management model in December.

It will share the results with related agencies, including the National AI Strategy Committee, to strengthen policy implementation. It will also discuss pending issues through the "Public AX Innovation Support Help Desk" and reflect them in guidelines.

Song Kyung-hee (송경희), chairperson of the commission, will serve as the government-side chair, and Kwon Chang-hwan (권창환), a presiding judge at the Busan Rehabilitation Court, will serve as the private-sector chair.

Kwon said he would address new privacy issues in a balanced way so that industry sites can innovate with predictability. Song stressed that 2026 would be an important turning point as AI permeates daily life, and said it would be run as a practical policy platform where the public and private sectors design safeguards together.
