The virtuous cycle ecosystem in which webtoon and web novel intellectual property drives drama hits, and a drama's popularity in turn fuels a comeback in the original work, is taking hold. The cycle is being seen as a core survival strategy for the content industry as it proves industrial "efficiency" that goes beyond simple traffic growth by reducing production costs and timelines.

According to the industry on Sunday, dramas that dominated the home screen in January share a common feature: maximising synergy through close linkage with original IP. IP discovered on platforms such as Naver Webtoon is being adapted for video and then leading back to inflows to the originals, strengthening the link more than ever.

When dramas rise, originals rise too... the proven 'comeback' formula

The most immediate effect of the virtuous cycle is a rise in original-work metrics. SBS drama "Judge Lee Han-young" surpassed an 11 percent nationwide audience rating in six episodes, making it a box-office success. The momentum spread directly to the original. In the two weeks after the drama aired (Jan. 2 to 15), downloads of the original web novel surged 147-fold from before the teaser was released, and views of the webtoon of the same name also jumped more than 20-fold. tvN's "Spring Fever" also saw views of the original webtoon rise 10-fold right after the drama was released.

Beyond a simple trickle-down effect, a "simultaneous targeting" strategy aimed at synergy from the planning stage has also emerged. KBS 2TV's "Eunaehaneun Dodoknim-a" pre-released the webtoon a week before the drama aired, securing potential viewers in advance. This is a sophisticated marketing strategy designed to lock in drama viewers and webtoon readers with each other. It suggests the sequential formula of "serialisation first, adaptation later" is breaking down, and the virtuous cycle is evolving toward maximising impact by running an IP's lifecycle simultaneously.

The hidden driver of the virtuous cycle is 'production efficiency'... cutting costs and time for better value

A practical reason of "management efficiency" underlies why this virtuous-cycle structure has become an industry standard. Using proven webtoon IP not only removes uncertainty in planning to raise the success rate, but also helps secure better value across the production process.

According to the Korea Creative Content Agency's "2025 Survey on the Status of Content IP Transactions," 67.9 percent of responding broadcasters said they felt cost reductions when using existing IP compared with creating new works. In film, 61 percent also said there was a production cost-cutting effect.

The effect of shortening production periods, described as a "race against time," is particularly clear. In broadcasting, 71.4 percent, and in film, 60.9 percent, said production periods were reduced or processes sped up when using original IP. The result reflects how already visualised storyboards (webtoons) and proven narratives significantly cut trial and error in the initial planning stage.

Viewers' consumption patterns ultimately provide the basis for this efficiency strategy to work. The main reasons viewers choose content based on original works were "curiosity about differences from the original" (38.4 percent) and "fan sentiment for the original" (34.6 percent). In other words, awareness of the original reduces initial marketing costs while also securing a clear base audience. With production conditions shrinking amid an economic slowdown, webtoon IP is being re-evaluated as the most efficient tool for managing risk and defending profitability, beyond being a guarantee of success.

Original authors are also welcoming the expansion. Haenal Lee (이해날), author of the web novel "Judge Lee Han-young," said, "I am happy that the original novel was adapted into a webtoon and then produced as a video work, allowing me to communicate with more people." She added, "Thanks to professional support, I was able to expand the universe in a stable way."

An industry official said, "The virtuous cycle structure between webtoons and dramas has now moved beyond a simple popularity push and entered a stage of industrial completion." The official added, "An 'IP value chain strategy' that considers both the influence of the original fandom and production efficiency from the planning stage will determine winners and losers in the content market going forward."
