Samsung Electronics applied recycled waste-glass material to a washer-dryer and received global certification. Samsung Electronics said on Jan. 30 it obtained UL Solutions' Environmental Claims Validations (ECV) certification.

ECV certification is a system that verifies whether a company's environmental claims about a product are valid and awards an eco-label. The certification process is strict and includes an assessment of the share of recycled materials in the manufacturing process and an engineer review validation.

Samsung Electronics worked with Samsung Display to crush waste tempered glass generated in the manufacturing process, remove impurities and then melt it. Through this process it produced recycled glass fiber with the same quality as conventional glass fiber. It applied it to the outer tub of the Bespoke AI Combo all-in-one washer-dryer. The outer tub is a key part that surrounds the washer's inner drum and uses a composite material containing glass fiber.

Samsung Electronics obtained certification for 10 percent recycled content in the outer tub. It recently replaced some of the glass fiber in the outer tub of domestically produced Bespoke AI Combo units with recycled material.

It plans to expand the use of recycled glass fiber within the year to drum washing machines produced in North America and Vietnam. To reduce the environmental burden, Samsung Electronics has applied recycled materials to various home appliances, including jointly developing enamel steel sheet with POSCO in September 2024 and using it in microwave and oven products.

Moon Jong-seung (문종승), a vice president of Samsung Electronics' DA business division, said Samsung Electronics has continued to expand the use of recycled materials in refrigerators, washing machines and ovens to reduce the environmental burden. He said it will also expand partnerships with external companies to develop various recycled materials.
