Google's announcement of 'Project Genie', which uses AI to generate 3D virtual environments, is stirring the game industry. On Jan. 31, Gigazine, citing Reuters, reported that shares of game companies including Take-Two, Roblox and Unity fell as much as 21 percent after Google announced the project.
Project Genie is an AI model that creates 3D virtual worlds using only text input. It is a web application that combines the image-generation AI 'Nano Banana Pro' and the generative AI 'Gemini 3'. It has limits in precisely reproducing the real world, and interaction within generated spaces remains restricted. Even so, Gigazine reported that it is delivering a major shock to the industry as the possibility of automating game development grows.
Joost van Dreunen (요스트 판 드류넨), a New York University professor of game studies, said, "If AI-driven design starts creating standalone experiences beyond simply accelerating workflows, the development method itself will be transformed." Advanced game titles take years to develop and require hundreds of millions of dollars, but Project Genie has the potential to shorten that, he said.
