Foldable OLED displays have so far been used mainly in premium smartphones and laptops, but Chinese manufacturer One-Netbook has adopted the technology in a new handheld gaming device. One-Netbook recently unveiled its new product, the OneXSugar Wallet, on Weibo, stressing that it is a foldable OLED-based gaming device.
The OneXSugar Wallet keeps a concept similar to the OneXSugar Sugar 1, which was released earlier this year, but differs in its structure, IT media outlet The Verge reported on Dec. 30 local time. Unlike the previous model, which had two screens, the new device uses a single 8.01-inch OLED screen. The display supports a resolution of 2,480 by 1,860 pixels and appears to target both portability and immersion associated with foldable designs.
Detailed hardware specifications have been released only in limited form so far. One-Netbook said the OneXSugar Wallet uses a flagship processor based on Qualcomm's gaming platform, but it did not disclose the exact chipset name, performance metrics or the scope of emulator support.
Images and video show controls consisting of an asymmetrical analog joystick, four action buttons and a D-pad. It also includes shoulder buttons, triggers and front-facing speakers, and is expected to offer an experience closer to a traditional handheld console.
Market attention is naturally focused on the price. High-performance handheld game consoles are currently priced at around $1,000, while devices using foldable OLEDs are priced much higher. Prices of the latest foldable smartphones, including Google's Pixel 10 Pro Fold and Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 7, are close to $2,000.
If the OneXSugar Wallet is released at a similar price, it will be key whether consumers choose it as a gaming-only device. Some interpretations have also emerged that the word "Wallet" in the product name is a metaphor hinting at a price burden. Attention is on how One-Netbook's new attempt, led by foldable OLED, will be received in the handheld gaming device market.
